Writing Jobs?

Dear Horace Greeley,

How do I get a writing job on the International Association of Professional Writers and Editors (IAPWE) website?

Want to Get Paid

Dear Want to Get Paid,

Your first step is to join IAPWE. You can email them at info@iapwe.org to inquire about membership. Once you’ve done that, you will have access to their jobs board and may apply to any of the listed jobs that seem suitable.

Before you do that, there are a few things you should do.

  1. Make sure your written English skills meet the standard specified in the job listing. In the world of professional writing, “good enough” isn’t good enough. There are tools like Grammarly.com that can aid you in making your your writing is clear and grammatically correct.

  2. Know the industry language for any specialty jobs you apply for. Writing for a medical website is very different than writing for a legal website, a construction website, or a manufacturing website. Each industry has its own special terminology, and it can be hard for readers to understand if you don’t use it correctly.

  3. Think about all your skills. If you have worked in journalism, even if it’s on your school’s newspaper, make sure that is reflected in your CV. If you belong to any professional associations, that’s another thing you should include. If you’ve taken classes outside of a college/university setting (including online classes), make sure they’re included in your skill set. You want to provide as broad a set of skills as you can so that employers see both the skill set you have, and the fact that you are willing to learn new skills.

Good luck!

Your humble servant,
Horace Greeley
